Job Description: Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeship

This Role

The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeship will work as part of our transport team which operates on our delivery routes across Ireland, the UK and Europe.

The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeship is linked to the Heavy Vehicle Mechanics program run in conjunction with SOLAS and a consortium of industry leaders. This is a 4-year apprenticeship, comprising of 7 phases, 4 on-the-job and 3 off-the-job in a training facility. All leading to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics. The successful candidate will be trained to perform tasks efficiently and to a high standard, in accordance with standard operating procedures. After training, the successful candidate will be able to work within the recognised trade or profession. S/he will be responsible for the welfare of the heavy vehicle maintenance as well as assisting in other areas around the workshop.

Role Requirements & Responsibilities

The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice will rotate through areas and functions of the business in a structured way to develop their skills across the business. Areas of expertise and responsibility will include:

  • To carry out routing servicing and repair on commercial vehicles
  • Reporting to Fleet Mechanic throughout the day
  • To ensure high levels of customer service are always maintained
  • To always act in a professional manner with clients and colleagues
  • To adhere to all regulations regarding the performance of duties including but limited to staff uniform, performance standards
  • To inspect and test systems and fault diagnosis
  • To ensure all required documentation is accurate
  • To perform and implement general administration daily.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time -to-time in line with your skills and competencies.

 

Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice Candidate Eligibility Criteria

As a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic you will need to be physically active and to be able to work with your hands. An awareness of health and safety and good housekeeping is essential as well as attention to detail.

 

All applicants must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Meet one of the following programme entry criteria:
    • Grade D in five subjects in the Department of Education & Skills Junior Certificate Examination or an approved equivalent
    • The successful completion of an approved Pre-Apprenticeship course
    • Three years’ work experience gained over sixteen years of age in a relevant designated industrial activity as SOLAS shall deem acceptable

 

ATC Candidate Requirements

Ability to be flexible in respect of work standards and demands. Capable of working under pressure at times and to strict deadlines. Ability to complete tasks. Resilient and able to deal with changing priorities. The successful candidate will be required to possess and demonstrate:

  • Ability to commute/relocate to Dublin, Dublin, CO. Dublin: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
  • A willingness to learn about the upkeep and maintenance of the heavy goods vehicle
  • Be passionate about delivering superior quality of work
  • Learn how to operate in a fast-paced white glove service provider – serving world class global tech companies.
  • Be results driven, with a “can-do” attitude.
  • Display strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to
    • Plan and organise,
    • Solve problems,
    • Work independently and as part of a team,
    • Recognise the need for good customer relations,
    • Demonstrate good work practices including time keeping, tidiness, responsibility, quality awareness and safety awareness.

 

The following qualifications, skills and experience would be an advantage.

  • A working knowledge of a European language.

Compensation & benefits

The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice role carries a base salary benchmarked against the living wage index and is a two-year fixed term contract. At the successful completion of the contract, including successful completion of the apprenticeship, the candidate is eligible to apply for a permanent position. ATC provides a range of benefits to employees and apprentices:

  • Salary – Benchmarked to the living wage. For apprentices starting in the 2022/23 academic year, the salary is €26,201.50. Salary will only be paid for the on-the-job phases (phase 1,3,5 and 7). For phase 2,4 and 6 a study allowance will be paid by SOLAS.
  • Progression – In year 5, HVMA graduates may apply for a full-time position with competitive industry salary, including pension, and other benefits.
  • Course fees – Course & registration fees may be reimbursed, subject to exam/academic performance, with 100% reimbursement for the highest grade, and pro-rata if lower grades are achieved.
  • Sports & social club – with regular events taking place throughout the year.

Training will be provided for all workplace systems and procedures. A workplace mentor together with the L&D Coordinator will guide the Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice through their work placement and provide input into other relevant aspects of the course and career development.
